About Ijamido Children’s Home

Ijamido Children’s Home, also known as “The Home of Succor,” is a unique non-adoptive orphanage dedicated to raising orphans, abandoned, motherless, destitute, and less-privileged children from infancy to adulthood in a loving family environment rooted in high moral standards. All children share the common surname “Willoughby,” creating a lifelong family bond.

Our Vision

To raise competent orphans, motherless, destitute, and less-privileged children who can positively contribute to their lives, communities, and the world.

Our Mission

To create a nurturing environment that supports the healthy development of vulnerable children, enabling them to self-actualize and become positive forces for societal progress.

Our Objectives

  • Provide comfort, hope, and a bright future for vulnerable children worldwide.
  • Offer moral and financial support to improve their overall well-being.
  • Educate and train children in academic, vocational, and life skills.
  • Elevate the standard of living for African children.
  • Address key challenges facing African children and youth.
  • Raise public awareness on critical child-related issues, including child abuse, abandonment, the importance of education, and parental care.
  • Provide a platform for vulnerable children to express themselves.
  • Offer daycare services for children of working parents.

Our History and Testimony

Founded in 1958 by Late Chief (Mrs.) Irene V. Willoughby (née Liverpool), a trained nurse-midwife born in Georgetown, Guyana, in 1904 and raised in Nigeria. Despite having no biological children of her own, she dedicated her life to caring for abandoned and vulnerable children, starting with a three-day-old baby girl on December 17, 1958.

Mama Willoughby, as she was affectionately called, provided hope and a loving home to over 600 children in her lifetime. She received numerous awards, including the honorary chieftaincy title “Iya Abiye of Ota.” The Olota of Ota also adopted all the children as princes and princesses of Ota.

The Home continues to thrive through donations from individuals, religious groups, corporate organizations, international donors, and contributions from alumni.

Management

Following the passing of our longtime CEO, Late Dr. Victoria Abosede Obakoya (the Home’s first child, who led with dedication until 2020), the Home is now overseen by a dedicated Caretaker Committee primarily composed of third-generation alumni raised in the Home.

This committee ensures the day-to-day operations and preserves Mama Willoughby’s vision of a lifelong family. The Home employs a team of 27 staff members, including administrators, accountants, supervisors, nannies, drivers, and guards, all committed to the children’s care and development.
